Tajmahal Pan Shop: A tribute to Rafi Sahab from his Jabra Fan

"Sundar Pan Sundar Gaan" (Beautiful Betel and Beautiful Songs) whenever I hear this sentence the first thing that comes to my mind is the "Taj Mahal Pan Shop" near New Market in the ground floor of Futnani Chambers in Kolkata.


This shop is famous for two reasons, Awesome Pan and the legendary Bollywood playback singer Mohammed Rafi Sahab's songs.

The owner Mr. Mohammed Muniruddin used to work in Mumbai Film industry in his young age... He met the famous and versatile Playback singer Mohammed Rafi and became his fan... He stayed in Mumbai for 15 years... After coming back to kolkata he joined his father's business and from that day onwards he plays only Rafi's songs in his shop. He wants more and more people to be Rafi's fan.

The Shop is full of photos of Rafi Sahab and the superstar of Hindi film industry Dilip Kumar ji (his original name was Yusuf Khan)


While working in Mumbai Muniruddin Ji met many stars like Raj Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari Ji etc. He was even member of the crew for Kamaal Amrohi's movie "Pakeezah".

UPDATE : Now passengers have to pay whatever is displayed on the meter... No extra Addition or Multiplication ... :) From 1st November 2012 Government of West Bengal has increased taxi and bus fares in Kolkata (Calcutta), as a result people (Passengers in general) are quite confused as the taxi drivers are charging whatever they wish coz the meters are the same only the way to calculate the fare has changed. So just to clear this "air of confusion" I am putting up this post.

After reading one of my earlier blog post on online Bengali newspapers (Published from Kolkata) many readers asked me to write a post on the online Bangla newspapers (epapers) published from Bangladesh. I fully agree and support their demand and think that everyone must get a chance to see and share the rich Bengali culture that is present both in India and Bangladesh. So here I am, with the ever-expanding list of Bangla Newspapers that are published in Bangladesh and are also available online. Online Bengali Newspapers - ePapers

In Delhi/Mumbai we get some leading Bengali news papers on the next day... This is because the papers have to travel this distance by Air. No one likes to read old news even if it is in Bangla. Thanks to Internet that has made it possible to read Bengali news papers online as soon as they are published. These Bengali news papers are in a way helpful to keep the Bengali alive in us. As we know Kolkata (Calcutta) is often referred to as the Cultural Capital of India, and many of these Newspapers Publish Bengali short stories, Poems, Articles etc. that nurture the Grey Matter in us.
